Sometimes I sort of lose my way a bit…get distracted with all the “doing” and forget about WHY I started doing things in the first place. Maybe you can relate?
It’s hard to keep the main thing the main thing.
Homeschooling is a prime example. There’s so much twiddly stuff to do that it’s easy to forget why we decided to take on the adventure in the first place!
But I’ve had a bit of an epiphany!
Many of you may know that I often speak at homeschool conventions. The presentation that’s most often requested is How to Understand Your Child’s Unique Learning Style.
That tells me something! Many people want to understand their child’s learning , and for several good reasons.
- Understanding your child’s learning style lets you teach the way your child learns best and most easily, which eliminates a LOT of frustration for both of you!
- Understanding your child’s learning style lets you save money and avoid overwhelm when choosing resources since you’ll be able to tell quickly which ones are the best fit for your family.
Saving time, money, and frustration…that’s a lot, right there!
But there’s something else . . . Something deeper. Something that has more than once caused grown men to seek us out later with tears in their eyes, and that “something” is actually the main thing–the thing that’s most often overlooked which turns out to be the most important thing of all!
So I’m going to pivot and do for you what other mamas did for me as we met for coffee while our children socialized. Those mamas poured wisdom into me about WHY we homeschool and WHY it’s different and WHY it matters so much. They kept me reminded about the main things, and that helped sooo much when I was new and overwhelmed. It helped a few years later when I was feeling burned out and “lost in the weeds.” And it helped me again when we entered the high school years and I was filled with self-doubt, wondering if we’d done enough.
For now, I’d like to leave you with a challenge:
- Think about your WHY. What was it that motivated you to want to homeschool? What was your original goal or dream for your family?
